Litigation and weather expert

There are times an attorney or an insurance company will need to hire a meteorologist to review historical weather data for a case that might go to court. There are many such cases and one example is a slip and fall that occurs on ice in a parking lot. Meteorologists are asked to recreate the weather events leading up to this slip and fall case.
There are many things to consider in hiring an expert here is just a “brief” list.
1. Although hiring someone local can be important many do not think that this is critical. Trained professionals should not have any issues of getting data on weather in regions outside of where they work out. I forecast for Mt. Everest but can do it remotely as there are abundant sources of data. However, if you do use a meteorologist outside your local region and the case goes to court than travel and lodging costs would need to be covered.
2. Although meteorologists from the National Weather Service (NWS) are qualified I understand that they cannot testify in a case which the federal government is not a party. Also, from my experience NWS would be reluctant to take on any type of outside weather related work.
3. Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) is a professional meteorologist who has an in-depth understanding of the atmosphere and its behavior. Dr. Mike Witiw on our staff is a CCM.
4. American Meteorological Society (AMS) is a professional organization and has a list of members.
